Lululemon and Klarna are extending their partnership to physical retail in Germany and the UK. Klarna is already well established across the Canadian gymwear and athleisure brand’s European online shops. Now comes the next stage of development- a move the Swedish payments provider describes as a significant step.
This service is made possible by Lululemon’s integration of the Adyen payments platform. At the checkout, customers scan a QR code with their smartphone and pay via the Klarna app, without the need for an application form or a separate card. Within seconds, customers can split their purchase into three interest-free instalments or defer payment by one month.
Klarna and Lululemon have offered flexible payment options across the sportswear brand’s online channels for more than five years. Bringing Klarna to the in-store checkout is the logical next step in this partnership.
At the same time, the launch underscores Klarna’s strategic expansion beyond online retail. Global annual spending in physical retail is estimated at around $28 trillion, almost four times that of online retail.
“Shopping shouldn’t become any less flexible just because you walk into a shop,” says David Sykes, chief commercial officer at Klarna. “We’ve spent years working to make the online checkout smarter. Now we’re bringing the same freedom to the in-store checkout. Whether customers buy their items in-store or order them online, they should always be able to pay in the way that suits them best.”
