Swayambhunath is an ancient Buddhist stupa situated on a hill west of central Kathmandu. It is known as the Monkey Temple because of the many monkeys living there. The complex is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus and has a history dating back many centuries.
At the top stands a white dome adorned with the Buddha’s distinctive eyes. The hillside is also home to smaller temples, monasteries, and numerous shrines.
In the evenings, there is no single large fire ceremony there. Instead, the atmosphere is generally quieter, with people offering prayers and engaging in small devotional rituals. The lively fire ceremonies, however, take place at the top of this hill.
