Europcar Mobility Group UK has welcomed the government’s announcement in last weeks Budget to cut the cost of electric vehicle charging at local lower-powered charge points. It is, however, disappointed that VAT on public charging hasn’t been reduced.
Gavin Morgan, Commercial Director at Europcar said:
“Charging cost and convenience remain among the biggest questions businesses and their drivers ask when they consider renting an electric vehicle. Many drivers renting electric don’t have home charging or are actually renting while away from home, so they depend on the public network. Making overnight charging on residential streets more affordable is a practical step which makes EV rental a more realistic choice.
“Rental is often the first time people drive an electric car. A good first experience turns curious drivers into confident EV users. Measures that bring down the cost of charging help that happen and will support the Government’s net zero ambitions.
“We also welcome the new taskforce on ‘tariff porting’. We’d encourage the Government to look next at the cost of higher-powered charging and VAT on public charging. Prices for rapid chargers have risen even faster, and those are the chargers rental customers rely on for longer journeys.
“Europcar will keep working with the government and industry to make electric driving accessible to everyone.”
