President Trump wants to rebrand artificial intelligence, presumably to improve public perception of the data centers he wants to build everywhere.
“When will The Wall Street Journal start calling Artificial Intelligence (AI), a very bad and inaccurate name, SI (Super Intelligence), the name which virtually everyone else is using, or soon will be,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social today. “In short order, we will be officially BANNING the term, ‘AI/Artificial Intelligence,’ in all relevant documents, and everything else, due to its inaccuracy. Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Artificial intelligence (AI) comes up a lot here on PetaPixel. Nearly all modern cameras use some form of AI in their autofocus systems; photo and video editing software uses AI for all sorts of tasks; and, not for nothing, AI poses an existential threat to some creative professionals. If President Trump has his way, the term AI will go away, replaced by “SI,” or “super intelligence.”
While the President of the United States may have significant influence over how government documents describe certain things, including the “relevant documents” he mentions, he doesn’t have the power to determine “everything else.” It’s also unclear precisely who the President means by “virtually everyone else,” as hardly anybody uses the term “super intelligence,” not even many tech executives with skin in the game.
While President Trump did sign an executive order last month directing the executive branch to use “SI” instead of “AI,” as The Hill reports, it has done virtually nothing to move the needle with the American public.
The President also described anyone who uses the term “artificial intelligence” as an “enemy,” claiming that the term “artificial intelligence makes intelligence sound fake.”
“It is not fake,” Trump continued. “It’s actually amazing.”
“Following the Historic White House Accord on Super Intelligence, where the World’s most important Technology Companies came together, and confirmed their responsibilities to the American People, I am announcing the formation of the Super Intelligence Force (SIF). The Super Intelligence Force is tasked with coordinating the effort of the Federal Government to ensure that America continues to lead the World in Super Intelligence, which many say is bigger than the Industrial Revolution, and the Internet, and will protect the interests, and improve the lives, of all Americans,” the President wrote on October 4.
Meanwhile, while AI gets a White House-approved makeover, Americans are growing more opposed to data centers, a hot topic ahead of next week’s midterm elections. Would people really be more in favor of SI data centers? Maybe if they were something really cool and fun like “super-duper mega ultra data centers deluxe 2.0,” then people would be happy to get on board.
