Lighting butter lamps at Swayambhunath Temple perched on a hill overlooking Kathmandu, is a beautiful Buddhist tradition. These small flames symbolise gratitude, hope, and the wish for peace and happiness. As the lamps flicker in the temple, they create a spiritual atmosphere of calm and reflection. For many devotees, lighting a lamp is also a way of expressing thanks, offering prayers, and wishing well for their loved ones. Surrounded by ancient stupas, prayer flags, and the sounds of Buddhist chants, this simple ritual becomes a deeply moving experience.
One of the candles was lit by my friend Kuba from Berlin before our joint trek along the Annapurna Circuit in the Himalayas.
