“You ain’t gunna turn me in, are ya?” Indican Pictures recently released this indie dark comedy film titled McConadilla, a wacky fun Texas creation made by Texas filmmaker Layton Matthews. It first premiered at the 2024 Smodcastle Film Festival a few years back, and also won the Best Feature prize at the 2025 Austin Horror Film Fest. Director Layton Matthews stars in this as Henry Simms – a perpetual man-child vlogger. When he experiences a series of traumatic events, his wise-crackin’ armadillo puppet, McConadilla, springs to life full of bad ideas to help Henry regain control of his world. This leads to a whirlwind of violence and a battle for Henry’s sanity! Matthews is also the voice of the sneaky McConadilla. The film’s cast also includes Charity Croomes, Bob Salatich, Christine Elise, Jesse C. Boyd, Becky Boxer, Carlos Larkin, and Evan Gamble as Bizzy. Not many reviews out there for this, but it does look kooky and weird and funny. It might be worth a watch after all? Especially considering how much it’s making fun of everyone & everything.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Layton Matthews’ film McConadilla, direct from YouTube:
“In case you couldn’t tell, this movie is about me, McConadilla. I gotta train my meatbag – a dude named Henry Simms – to stop being a snivelin’ loser. He’s one of them typical ‘creative types’ you find in West Hills, Cali-for-ni-a. Poor guy had a messed up childhood, and now… let’s just say before I came along, his datin’ profile headline said ‘agreeable man with a boyhood innocence’ and the dumbass wondered why his sheets were always dry. Anyway, this flick has it all – gangsters, romance, buds doin’ bro stuff, knives, interior/exterior scenes, guts, and an ending. Clearly I’m biased, so don’t take my word for it.” Uh huh. McConadilla is directed by American indie actor / writer / filmmaker Layton Matthews, director of the films The Wanderers and Beta previously. The screenplay is also written by Layton Matthews; from a story by Mark Peters & Matthews. Produced by Jason S. Amodeo, Geoffrey M. Gardner, Layton Matthews, Mark Peters. This first premiered at the 2024 Smodcastle Film Festival a few years ago. Indican Pictures released Matthews’ McConadilla film direct-to-VOD – it’s available to watch from Prime Video now. Look any good?
